2 Secret Words That Can Double Your Click Through Rate

July 23rd, 2007 · 2 Comments

increase your click through rate ctrWhat if I told you there were two little words you can use in your marketing that will double your click through rate? How much would you pay me for those two words? What if I told you these two words were so powerful that when read, people will click on them like mindless zombies? How much then.

Good news friends. I’m feeling charitable and will share these two words with you for free! Yes, you heard right, free! :) (trying out my County Fair pitch voice here…lol)

Experimenting with your sites will lead you to discover new conversion techniques

I discovered these two secret words sometime ago while running some experiments on CrazyEgg. Click here to read my review of CrazyEgg.

I had one page on another site with a link at the end of a long post. I had placed the link there without much thought. Through CrazyEgg, I learned that people were clicking that link. I then moved that link above the fold which increased the CTR. Then I changed the wording of that link using my two secret words and my CTR went through the roof!

So to prove to myself this wasn’t a fluke, I changed the wording in the link text on my other sites using these two words and experienced the same increase in click through rates on every link I changed! I noticed anywhere from a 13.1% increase all the way up to a 62.7% increase in the number of clicks those links received.

Okay Don, enough of the suspense, just tell us what these secret words are!

Not so fast partner. First I have to tell you why I believe these words are so powerful. I believe these two words, when used together, are powerful and subconsciencly drives people to click on your ads because they have been “trained” to do it by the Internet Society.

They’re powerful when used together because they direct a visitor to perform an action.

Anytime you’re writing ads, landing pages or any offers for a product, you must direct your visitors to do what it is your trying to get them to do. “Order now” or “Call Now” are two very powerful call to action phrases that many people fail to take advantage on with their affiliate marketing pieces.

Okay, drum roll please….your two secret words to increase your click through rate are…

Wait a minute, before I tell you what they are, I want you to click here and read this post on copywriting. I know you’ll learn some important tips for your affiliate marketing or blog.

Okay, here you go, I’ve dragged this on long enough. One reason I did it was to prove a point, which I’ll show you later.

The two secret words that will increase your click through rate are…

Click Here to learn what these two secret words are.

Yep, that’s it. Feel let down? Don’t. I just made you a lot of money. You can thank me later ;)

Why are these two words so powerful?

Because as I stated above, they direct a visitor to perform an action. Whether or not people like it or whether we realize it, we like being told what to do. When you direct your visitors to do something, they’re less likely to go about doing something that is less valuable to you, like hitting the “Back” button!

The words “Click Here” have been a part of the Internet since the beginning. It’s how we learned to navigate the Internet from day one.

Internet surfers, and this includes me, are like the Chickens you see at the County Fair. They’ll dance as long as their is a reward after the show. That’s what we’ve learned the words “Click Here” do when used in conjunction with a link.

Now you have a pair of words that not only direct visitors to do something, Click Here, but that are ingrained in their subconscious minds that a pleasant experience awaits them after they “Click Here“. That’s pretty powerful in anyone’s book

Why Did I Drag You Along…To Prove A Point, That’s Why!

As part of dragging you good readers along, I’m wondering how many times you tried to click the words “Click Here”. There are some live links to other resources on this page. The other “Click Here’s” I colored Blue to see how many of you tried to click them believing they were live links…..just to prove my point ;)

Oh yeah, don’t think I won’t know how many times you’ve tried to click on the false “Click Here” links, I’m running CrazyEgg on this page! ;)  I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Good article. You had me reading till the end (but I like how it was structured so even if I was ‘skimming’ I would get the message).

    Keep rocking –

I will agree with your statement that “click here” is a good call to action. I have even used websites that started with “ClickHere” BUT, I don’t recommend using the term within your anchor text. You don’t want to be found in the search engines for click here, you want to be found for a certain keyword phrase. If you want it to appear that click here is a part of the link just color the text the same as the hyperlink, but only make the actual keyword phrase, for example “review of Crazy Egg”, the anchor text.
