Good point - it is the second time some of my websites sunk, and I can confirm it has to do with the backlinks. My two cents:
- first time this happened to me, I had the bad idea to use G. Analytics on a domain that was old, but with no content whatsoever. It had less than 20 links, generally poor, but it ranked PR1 just like that. First reshuffle with GA on, dropped to 0. Stopped using GA and let things settle down - it was back in about 2 weeks.
Second - a website I own now has a no-follow link (according to SEO plugin) listed in the webmasters backend. I have never noticed this before and it is the only one. Either G or the plugin are not working okay, imho. The same lost about 200 backlinks this time, so I am waiting to see what comes out of it.
Hope this helps - wasting time to double-guess G's moves is probably stupid, but unavoidable. I just imagine they have their own cowboys and hotshots there, winning the incompetence badge with every move they make.
